Men just have thicker skin

Tuesday, June 19, 2007

It's not fair, but it's true. Men really do have thicker skin than women, four times thicker in fact. That's all well and good, but it's part of what leads you guys to believe that your skin doesn't need any "maintenance" because it doesn't seem to be aging. The truth - it needs maintenance just like your car, your gadgets, and your sports gear.

Why? Because while you're sporting young-looking skin well into your 30s and possibly 40s, when the effects of your no-maintenance skin care routine start to show, the change happens quickly. With just a few products you can start to create a gameplan to keep your aging under wraps. And based on the Today Show Father's Day Episode, many men are electing to do just that! In fact, they reported that the men's grooming/personal care category brought in somewhere around $70 million last year. You lucky fellas are gonna be looking more dapper with each year that passes. Here's the first product that I think every man should have on hand:

Must-Have #1 - Moisturizer, man-sturizer call it whatever makes you feel most comfortable, just start using this product today! Your skin is going to benefit from the hydration alone, and you'll be able to see the difference. Sporting a moisturizer with UV protection will earn you some serious extra credit. Because while your skin may be thicker, the stat still stands true that more that 80% of the aging you'll see on your face is from sun exposure and other environmental factors. The perfect product to start with - Tolsom Skin Protective Lotion.

This was one of my favorite brands to launch since starting at Quixtar, and I seriously love this lotion. It takes the guess work out of finding the perfect product. It's formulated just for men's skin, the T-10 complex is designed to moiturize and control oil, it feels light when you put it on your skin, provides SPF 15 protection, and has a citrus scent that's just delish! Plus, the packaging is so great. It's ultra-masculine and simple, so you can carry it with you anywhere and not have to feel like your friends are going to tease you about being a metro. Plus, in my book, making it to metro status should be considered a huge compliment! More must-haves to come.

 Cheers,

t

hey, thanks for the post T! A thing I remember reading years ago is that one other reason why men's faces tend to age slower than women's, despite our normal poor skincare, is that we actually give our faces a nice massage on an almost daily basis (shaving!). No idea if that helps or not, but seems to make some sense. What do you think?

Sure thing and there's plenty more to discuss on men's skin care! As far as the shaving goes ... I'll never wish for facial hair but any excuse for a daily massage sounds good to me! ;) Actually, I'd think that shaving, or not shaving, could help men in a few ways. By shaving you're helping to exfoliate that very top layer of skin but only in one area. When you don't shave you probably have a little extra protection from the elements.

Lucky fellas! And don't even get me started on the fact that wrinkles, tanned skin, and scruff, on men equals "rugged" or "outdoorsy" a la Robert Redford...

My husband LOVES the tolsom line for men.  I admit after shaving I use the after shave splash around my ankles and knees to control those nasty ingrown hairs that are a huge NO-NO for ladies.  About your basement woos and letting your skin go.  If nothing else just stick to your face washing regiment and that will help out lots, drink lots of water to flush the bad things out that go through your body and yes eating right is a must which does include your vitamins but like I said if anything stick to your face regiment.  I know as having zillions of children sometimes that is all I get in.  I have found for severe dark circles beside using the eye replenishing cream instead of using the concealer which is sometimes not enough I use my lightweight foundation instead of the concealer.  It matches my skin color of course, it is lightweight enough not to cause the make-up creases, absorbs the oil and has the added feature of SPF in it.  Hope that helps ttfn

Thanks for your blog.  I thought it would be helpful information for me to share with others, but after reading you Men Have Thicker Skin article, I felt you were talking to me!

That moved me to buy the Must Have #1, but although I received it two or three days ago, I haven't started using it yet.  The reason is this question that you could speak to.  It is:  Does it affect the plastic frames of my glasses (discoloration or weakening)?

Since I work as a pizza delivery person, it will be an excellent product to use. (Colorado is one of the sunniest states, and I live at over 7500'.)

I love tolsom! Even on days that I do not shave I use the after-shave. Gives an awesome refreshing lift to the skin. Looking forward to more of your recommendations for men. Thanks!

What moisturizer do you recommend for forearms/body - basically other than face?

Congrats Donald and interesting question! I've never heard of anyone having a problem with discoloration or weakening of their glasses frames from the lotion. I personally wear a lotion with SPF every day and I've never experienced a problem with my glasses (which I wear occassionally) or my sunglasses (which were almost a part of my beauty tipsy illustration because I have them on so much). Sorry I can't be of more help with this one ... I'm guessing you'll be good to go. On a different note, the cost of replacing glasses frames is far less than the cost of dealing with the damage that the sun's doing to your skin every day, especially at 7500'. Start using that product today, k?
